Redding, on an ancient trade route known as the Siskiyou Trail, was first inhabited by the Wintu Indians. In the early 1800s, Hudson's Bay Company trappers and the United States Exploring Expedition passed through Redding. The first non-native settler was Pierson B. Reading, an early California pioneer.
In 1844, Reading received a Mexican land grant for what was to become the town of Redding. It was first known as Poverty Flats but was later named after railroad man Benjamin B. Redding and then rechristened "Reading" in 1874, honoring founder Pierson B. Reading. The railroad, however, would not recognize the change, and the name Redding was restored in 1880.
