Area Information

Redding, on an ancient trade route known as the Siskiyou Trail, was first inhabited by the Wintu Indians. In the early 1800s, Hudson's Bay Company trappers and the United States Exploring Expedition passed through Redding. The first non-native settler was Pierson B. Reading, an early California pioneer.

In 1844, Reading received a Mexican land grant for what was to become the town of Redding. It was first known as Poverty Flats but was later named after railroad man Benjamin B. Redding and then rechristened "Reading" in 1874, honoring founder Pierson B. Reading. The railroad, however, would not recognize the change, and the name Redding was restored in 1880.

During the 20th century, the area's main industry was lumber. Currently, Redding's 2 biggest industries are the medical and legal industries.

Redding is the second sunniest city in the nation with 88% days of sunshine per year. The weather is usually moderate and there are 4 distinct seasons. The area averages about 22 inches of precipitation each year.

The Turtle Bay Park and Museum features 3 museums, walking trails and animals. The Redding Turtle Bay Exploration Park is slated to be a 300-acre interpretive park with a 700+ ft pedestrian bridge. You'll also enjoy the Shasta State Historic Park/Joss House, which preserves some of the town's original brick buildings and a restored general store and county courthouse.

The Shasta Museum displays Indian relics and other memorabilia. Nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park features volcanic phenomena and other thermal features. Its peak is the southernmost volcano in the Cascade Range and the western part of the park boasts lava flow mountains and lava pinnacles.

Redding has 2 hospitals: Mercy Medical Center (Catholic Healthcare West) and Shasta Regional Medical Center, formerly Redding Medical Center.

Redding's educational program includes its elementary, high and special schools, as well as a community college. Simpson College, a private evangelical Christian liberal arts college in Redding, offers a variety of majors.

Redding is the key community of that beautiful and legendary region. It is located in the upper portion of the Sacramento River Valley near the foot of the Sierra & Trinity mountains. It's nestled in the lush and everlasting beauty of mountains, forests, lakes and streams. Redding also offers over 1,500 acres of parks.

Lake Shasta boasts 370 miles of shoreline. Shasta Dam is the 2nd largest and highest concrete structure in America!  Whiskeytown Lake, 20 minutes west, has 36 miles of shoreline, and is part of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area with sandy beaches, marinas and more.  The Sacramento River provides great fishing and swimming.

You can also enjoy McArthur Burney Falls State Park, once called "the Eighth Wonder of the World" by Teddy Roosevelt, Lake Britton, Mt. Shasta Ski Park, Lake Shasta Caverns and Lava Beds National Monument.
